To the face I did not know
The one whose name is clandestine
Spoken whispers, just below hearing
Your breath did not share my space
I never knew your laughter
Nor could I recognize your voice
Your eyes and mine have never met
But I grieve the loss of you.
The you were human, like me.
The you who had happiness and sorrow
The you who was quiet or loud
The you who was every bit as breathing as I am
The you who was every bit as worthy of love
The you who was every bit as alive
You were invaluable to the fabric of the Universe
I stand as witness that you existed
I attest to your right to dignity as a human being
May love now surround you with grace and mercy.

Community Prayer
My neighbors,
We are gathered here today in peace
We honor the truth of the word love
We strive together to build a better community
To promote and create our neighborhood
That takes care of one another through
Respect, compassion, courage, and vision.
For anybody that would not honor our covenant
We will lead them by our actions to the light of love in your name.
Hear our prayer so that we may be one people, your people.
Thank you.
Sacrifice
When I was growing up, military was a part of our family. My dad was a Seabee (Construction Battalion), later, my brothers joined the Army and the Marines. My Grandfather and great Grandfather were both Army. It was just accepted that to serve the United States of America was a great honor. My family was lucky enough to have our boys brought back home safely. For that I am grateful.
But there are those like this: “I have a POW/MIA bracelet that bears the name of a Michigan Marine that never came home. Robert Curtis Borton Jr. Missing since 1966 during his first few weeks in Vietnam. Please think of his family that lost him and the future he never had.”–Ron Martell
I wrote this with them in mind.
Sacrifice
The bagpipes howl
“Amazing Grace”
Drums beat hollow
21 shots placed
The blackened sky
hangs its veil
The heavens give
a hero’s hail
to fallen comrade
man of war
from his daughter
and wife he’s torn
by seductive tendrils
of patriotic pride
under red, white, and blue
his final goodbye
